SCIENTIFIC INTERESTS AND GOALS

Given my background in mathematics, I have always found great joy in creating models to represent the world, and my interest in the brain follows from this passion. As I began to look inward at the mental models we use to navigate the world, I became curious about the biological machine that makes model creation possible, and I marveled at how such a machine has emerged from billions of even smaller, unintelligent machines. There exists a principle of self-organization that makes life, consciousness, and intelligence possible, and it is my main research interest to explore this phenomenon as it manifests in the brain. As such, I wish to pursue the theoretical side of neuroscience, as well as to accrue experience in the fields of information theory, the theory of complex systems, and cybernetics. From this perspective, I would like to examine how the brain makes sense of hearing and audition, as both music and language learning are lifelong passions of mine. Also, to develop on my background in computer science, I wish to explore how modern machine learning methods can be used to elucidate the immense amount of data made available by modern experimental techniques.
