Details The bride price practice gives husbands and husbands' family members controlling influence over married African women. The bride-price places married African women in an inferior power relation in marital unions in most African countries and the linked male superiority is supported by community values which privilege the interests of the community in negotiating morally optimal courses of action and moral theory is determined by socio-historical context, including the traditions, religions and culture of the community. This state of affairs place such married African women in a situation of vulnerability where they are incapable of protecting their own interests especially in matters of reproductive health. It is also responsible for their incapacity to make authentic autonomous decisions in matters that directly pertain to their health.
